The FCC Announces a Stay on the Narrowband
Migration Process
SANTA CLARA, Calif., December 15, 2003 – The
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently announced a stay
that will delay the Narrowband Ruling implementation date of January
13, 2004 pending further consideration by the Commission.
Background
In February 25, 2003, the FCC announced that it would refuse any applications
for new operations using 25 kHz channels. The ruling would have affected
surveyors and others that use RTK/GPS technology for precision applications
in surveying and machine control. Currently, most precision applications
make use of radio frequencies that are licensed for 25 kHz channels.
Users of 25 kHz channels would be required to migrate to more spectrum-efficient
12.5 kHz channels. The objective of the original ruling was to reduce
radio congestion and make more frequencies available to the radio user
community.
The FCC has not yet specified a new deadline for
the migration process. For additional information, see a Summary
of Regulations at http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-03-306A1.doc.
